Meta tags are the first thing potential customers see before they ever land on your store. They show up in Google search results, social media previews, and browser tabs — and most WooCommerce stores either ignore them or set them up poorly.
Getting them right is one of the quickest SEO improvements you can make.
What Are Meta Tags?
There are two that matter most for ecommerce:
Title tag — the clickable blue headline in Google search results. Also appears in the browser tab when someone is on your page.
Meta description — the short text that appears under the title in search results. It doesn't directly affect rankings, but it directly affects whether someone clicks.
Both are invisible to visitors on the page itself. They live in the HTML <head> section. WooCommerce doesn't display them anywhere by default — you need either an SEO plugin or custom code to set them.
Why They Matter
Title tags affect rankings directly
Google uses your title tag to understand what a page is about. A title tag that includes your target keyword gives you a significant advantage over a page with a generic title like "Product — My Store."
Meta descriptions affect click-through rate
Two results can rank in the same position, but the one with the more compelling description gets more clicks. More clicks means more traffic — and over time, higher click-through rates can improve your rankings further.
They control how your store appears on social media
When someone shares a product link on Facebook, Instagram, or WhatsApp, the platform pulls the title and description from your meta tags. A missing or generic description looks unprofessional and gets far fewer clicks.
How to Set Meta Tags in WooCommerce
Option 1: Use an SEO plugin (recommended)
Rank Math or Yoast SEO both add title and description fields to every product, page, and category in your WordPress dashboard. They also let you set templates — so every new product automatically gets a sensible default title format.
Install one, go to any product in your dashboard, scroll to the SEO section at the bottom, and fill in:
- Title tag: Include the product name and your primary keyword, under 60 characters
- Meta description: A compelling one-to-two sentence summary, under 155 characters
Option 2: Generate them, then paste in
If you have a lot of products or pages to work through, the SEO Meta Tag Generator writes optimised title tags and meta descriptions based on your page type, keyword, and content. It shows character counts in real time so you know exactly what fits without having to count manually.
Writing Good Title Tags
A strong ecommerce title tag follows this structure:
[Primary Keyword] — [Differentiator] | [Brand Name]
Examples:
- "Slim Leather Wallet for Men — 12 Cards, RFID Blocking | Volta"
- "Handmade Soy Candles — Natural, Long-Burn | The Candle Room"
- "WooCommerce SEO Services — Fixed Price, No Calls | Scrippt Dev"
Keep it under 60 characters — anything longer gets cut off in search results with an ellipsis.
Include your primary keyword near the front — Google weights words earlier in the title more heavily.
Don't stuff keywords. One keyword, one differentiator, your brand name. That's it.
Writing Good Meta Descriptions
A good meta description does three things:
- Confirms the page is relevant to what the user searched for
- Gives a reason to click — a benefit, a differentiator, or a compelling question
- Stays under 155 characters — longer descriptions get cut off
Weak: "Buy leather wallets online. Free shipping. Shop now."
Strong: "Slim full-grain leather wallets that last a decade. Holds 12 cards, RFID blocking. Free UK shipping on orders over £30."
The second version is specific, includes relevant keywords naturally, and gives the reader a reason to click instead of moving on to the next result.
Priority Order for Your Store
If you're starting from scratch, tackle meta tags in this order:
- Homepage — most important single page
- Top-selling product pages — highest revenue impact
- Category pages — often overlooked but frequently rank for broad keywords
- All remaining product pages
- Blog posts and content pages
Don't try to do everything at once. An hour spent on your top 10 pages will have more impact than rushing through every page at once.
