Question 1

What is alt text and why does it matter for ecommerce?

Accepted Answer

Alt text (alternative text) is a short description added to an image tag that tells search engines and screen readers what the image shows. For ecommerce stores, good alt text helps your product images appear in Google Image Search, improves your page's overall SEO relevance, and makes your site accessible to visually impaired shoppers — which is also a legal requirement in many regions.

Question 2

Does alt text directly affect my search rankings?

Accepted Answer

Yes, in two ways. First, images with relevant alt text contribute keyword signals to the page, reinforcing what the page is about. Second, well-described images rank in Google Image Search, which can drive additional organic traffic directly to your product pages.

Question 3

Does it work for Shopify and WooCommerce?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Both platforms let you add alt text to every product image in the media editor. Just generate the alt text here, copy it, and paste it into the image alt field in your product editor. No technical knowledge required.

Question 4

What makes a good alt text for a product image?

Accepted Answer

Good alt text is specific, descriptive, and naturally includes the product name and a key attribute — for example: "navy blue merino wool crew neck sweater, women's medium". Avoid keyword stuffing, filler phrases like "image of", and leaving it blank. The goal is to describe what you'd say to someone who cannot see the image.

Question 5

How long should alt text be?

Accepted Answer

Keep it under 125 characters. Screen readers typically cut off alt text beyond that length, and longer descriptions tend to become keyword-stuffed rather than genuinely descriptive. One or two concise phrases is the ideal target.

Question 6

Should every image on my store have alt text?

Accepted Answer

Every meaningful image should have descriptive alt text — product photos, lifestyle images, infographics. Decorative images (borders, background shapes) can use an empty alt attribute (alt="") so screen readers skip them. In practice, product images are the highest priority because they directly support both SEO and conversions.
